At the moment we have recorded two songs with
Paul as producer - 'Every Day Is Like a Friday
Night' and 'Kommunikate'. We met up with Paul in
Chester after Steve Lamacq told him that we were
looking for a producer and suggested he got in
touch with us. It was fucking weird when we got
the email from Paul as we'd been joking about
asking him to record us, because being Mansun
fans we knew that he'd produced '...Grey
Lantern' and 'Six' and we all really love the
sound of those records, but we didn't know he
was into working with other bands.
The guitarists in
our band (twins Stuart and Martin) we're even in
the Mansun fan club back when they first started
out! As far as the recording sessions went,
before we started Paul came up to Derby for a
couple of days and we bashed through the songs
loads times to try out different
structures/rhythmic changes/tempo's, etc. We
then tried out loads of different guitar and amp
combinations and bass/bass amp combinations and
different drum/percussion ideas to really nail
the sound that Paul could hear and wanted to get
into the tracks...he's very much a perfectionist
when it comes to that stuff and is really
fucking knowledgeable about it all. After that
we went up to Liverpool Parr Street Studio for 4
days and did all the instrumental recording,
doing the journey from Chester - through the
Mersey tunnel - to Liverpool and back everyday.
The following week
i went to Paul's house near London for a few
days and did all the vocals in his home studio
set-up...i learnt fucking loads and it was
really cool to work on vocal stuff with Paul, as
in the past, most producers that we've worked
with have been all about getting the guitars,
bass and drums sounding right and i haven't
really been given much direction with the
vocals, so that was really cool.
We're immensely
happy and proud with the way the tracks have
turned out, and we'll hopefully be recording the
rest of our debut album with Paul when we
finally sort out our record deal.
